Jul 25, 2011 Hey logjam, good to hear from you,I love the shiloh sharps.Every year in Big Timber Montana they have a black powder shoot and their guns are to die for, they have a 9 month waiting list for a hand made shiloh sharps in 45/70,45/90,45/110 and some thing in 50 cal. They shoot up to 600 yards,it's a hoot,I love it.They used to have a 3 year waiting list but it's better now.I asked if they could.
I accidentally clicked on the csharpsarms.com website and found myself filling out an order and came across something I have no clue about. Where it states caliber I selected 45/70 and it pops up with a 45-70 2 1/10 Sharps straight. What does 2 1/10 mean?I also was hoping that some of you that own a sharps if you would choose the 28' barrel or the 30' barrel for off hand shooting to about 200 yards. Also are this two sizes in barrels long enough to lob a round 1000 yards. If not than I can select a less expensive sight since my cost as I have selected is close to $3500. But it may be less now as I think of using it more and more for hunting hog, deer and elk I might use a less fancy wood and forego the Hartford collar as my Quigley has it.I own the Quigley model from Cimmaron/Uberti with the 34' and so now I do not mine waiting for one to get built. It is a good thing that I am alone as I am giggling in ways I have never heard sounds come out of me.
Griz pretty well nailed it. Back then the cartridges chambered in Sharps were designated by caliber and case length, not a lot different from the way Europe designates theirs in mm as in 8 X 57. As Griz mentioned the 45-70 was often 2 1/10.
My 45-90 is 2.4, the -100 is 2.6 and the -110 was 2 7/8. From what the Sharps book says the 3 1/4 case was never a factory chambering by Sharps so I can't speak to how it might or might not have been designated. My two Shiloh's are both marked in caliber and case length, the 40-70 is 40-2.5.
As I understand it the reason for using case length rather than powder charge, as we do today, is that several different loads were put up in the same length case with that load reflected on the ammo package. Mine are both 30 inch barrels and I've never had any difficulties using them in the thick. Both mine are octagon to round just 'cause I like it.
1000 yards is doable with either barrel length. If shooting that far competitively was the criteria I'd choose a different cartridge rather than be concerned with 2 inches of barrel length. One can only assume that barrel length would be personal preference and it's certain neither length can be considered wrong. With Shiloh sometimes standard wood can be stunning. My Montana Roughrider in 45-2.4 is pretty plain, straight grained walnut.
My #1 Sporter in 40-70 has stunning wood and I didn't opt for any higher grade wood when I ordered it.I like the Hartford collar and REALLY like the Hartford fore end but sort of as with what you're thinking, I opted not to order either because I didn't want to pay for them. My thought was I could spend that money on a good set of MVA, long range sights which I subsequently did for the #1 Sporter. The Roughrider is set up with a Browning, tang mounted hunting sight with the sight base cut and drilled to match the Shiloh screw spacing.
Made sense to me to alter a $100 sight as to muck with, at that time, what was a $1600 rifle.IMO, the only Sharps reproduction that surpasses the Shiloh is the Axtel but, I'm not willing to pay the tariff for one of those. That is if you don't include Griz's Gemmer Sharps. I love his rifle and wish I could examine and handle it!!!!!!!! I can't imagine you'll be disappointed in a Shiloh. The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts. Join us to discuss firearms of all kinds, gun accessories, legal issues and more.
